THE OPEN-PREM
INFLECTION POINT

When Open-Source  LLMs and Hardware Economics Converge

The Open-Prem Inflection Point is a framework created by David Borish that identifies when on-premises AI deployment becomes more cost-effective than cloud computing for enterprise organizations. As open-source models approach performance parity with proprietary systems and hardware costs continue to decline, organizations face a strategic decision about where to run their AI workloads. This paper provides the data, benchmarks, and cost analysis to inform that decision.

KEY FINDINGS

  • Open-source AI models have reached performance parity with proprietary models across a growing number of enterprise use cases.

  • The cost of on-premises GPU infrastructure has declined to the point where the total cost of ownership breaks even with cloud API costs within 12-18 months for many workloads.

  • Data sovereignty and security requirements in regulated industries create additional economic incentive for on-premises deployment.

  • The companion Open-Prem Strategy Accelerator workshop is delivered in partnership with IBM for enterprise clients.
