THE OPEN-PREM
INFLECTION POINT V2
(DECEMBER 2025 UPDATE)

When Open-Source  LLMs Achieve Frontier Parity

This is the December 2025 update to the Open-Prem Inflection Point framework, documenting the moment open-source models achieved genuine frontier parity with proprietary systems. Two landmark releases, DeepSeek V3.2 and Zhipu AI's GLM-4.6, now match or surpass GPT-5 and Gemini-3.0-Pro. DeepSeek V3.2-Speciale achieved gold medals at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad and International Olympiad in Informatics. GLM-4.6 is the only frontier-scale model (355B parameters) available under MIT license, enabling enterprises to self-host without vendor lock-in. Cost savings have expanded to 80-90% at API level and 95%+ with self-hosting at scale.

WHAT CHANGED IN V2: DECEMBER 2025 UPDATE

  • DeepSeek V3.2 matches GPT-5 performance while reducing inference costs by 70% through DeepSeek Sparse Attention.

  • GLM-4.6 delivers Claude Sonnet 4-level coding performance with 90% lower API costs and full self-hosting capability.

  • Both models are MIT-licensed, enabling complete enterprise control over AI infrastructure and data sovereignty.

  • Cost comparison updated: DeepSeek V3.2 API at $0.27/$1.10 per million tokens versus GPT-5 at $2.50/$10.00 and Claude Sonnet 4.5 at $3.00/$15.00.

  • Self-hosted GLM-4.6 achieves $0.05-$0.20 per million tokens.

  • Chinese open-source AI models now account for 17% of global downloads.

  • Hardware economics continue improving: dual RTX 5090 configurations match H100 performance at 25% of the cost.
